After running his own artisan garden centre in Sandon, Chelmsford, Richard and his wife Rachel took on The Barn from his father in 2013 and evolved the business into a garden centre that stands out from the rest.

The Barn really is a family run business with loyal staff and everything you see is chosen with care, from the wide range of carefully curated plants, to handpicked, stylish gardenalia and giftware. Although with its revamp in 2016, the emphasis has always been on maintaining a friendly, family orientated garden centre, where service is of paramount importance.

The Barn at Turkey Cock Lane, Colchester, first opened in 1986 initially with the production of a small number of bedding plants grown in a few greenhouses. The garden centre grew and in 2002 a café was introduced at the request of the increasing number of loyal customers. In 2017, the café was extensively refurbished and now serves delicious coffee and cakes, as well as home cooked breakfast and lunch.
